Empowerment via An Afghan Scarf

So I saw this gorgeous scarf.

 
Then I saw the price tag. $88.00!!

Then I read the reviews:

"I waited at least 3-4 years to get my hands on this scarf. Every time I tried, it was sold out. So, this time, I was determined to get it this year, and I did!"

"I wanted this scarf SO BAD. I tried to get it last year and tried to get it backordered but it didn't happen. So I have checked back weekly for months to see if it would come back. Last week suddenly it did and I jumped at ordering it."

"I wanted it last year, ordered it, but I was too late, all sold out. I was hoping someone would return theirs, but that didn't happen. I was so hoping it would be available this year, so I checked on-line every month, then all of a sudden it was there."

And I started wondering... If these women wanted this scarf so badly, why didn't they just make one? Why wait years for it? If they couldn't crochet, why not learn?

Which is what I decided to do.

I found this fabulous hexagon crochet tutorial. A beginner can follow along, with maybe a little bit of help from youtube. And I started crocheting with bit of yarn. This is what I have so far. My hexagons are too big for the scarf pictured, but they are hexagons. And now I can make as many as I want, in whatever colors I want, whenever I want.

 
It's not a scarf yet, but it will be.

I always thought crocheting was old-fashioned. Something my grandmother was incredibly talented at, but didn't quite apply to my life. I never would have thought I would feel so empowered by the act of gathering my yarns and a crochet hook. I don't need to wait for someone else. I don't need to hope that good fortune will come my way. I don't need to find a way to justify the money. I can just create. What a good feeling!
